As WopeCar marks its 8th anniversary, we’re excited to accelerate into a cleaner, greener future by adding our first electric vehicle to a fleet of fuel‑powered cars. This milestone not only highlights our commitment to innovation but also builds on our SDG 5 work (Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment) and now continues our SDG 13: Climate Action journey.

Our Road to EV Rentals

From the moment we began researching electric vehicles in Ghana, we discovered a number for sale but none for rent. Securing a partner willing to pilot an EV rental took months of outreach and negotiation.

In October last year, a Ghanaian couple from Sweden arrived in Accra and rented with us, served personally by our General Manager, Sheena Sue Biney. They returned earlier this year and, impressed again by the experience, asked to meet Sheena about a deeper partnership: placing their own EV on our fleet. This mirrors what we already do for some international clients, who buy cars and simply add them to our rental pool when they’re in town. For this couple who already use a Tesla in Sweden, it was a way to support Ghana’s emerging EV movement and to be our first individual EV partners.

The State of EV Adoption in Ghana

Despite global momentum, EV adoption in Ghana remains in its infancy. A recent study of 902 Ghanaian drivers found that people are drawn to EVs because of economic benefits, environmental concerns, and the boost they give to one’s status and identity. However, limited charging infrastructure, high upfront costs, and unreliable electricity persist.

Meanwhile, electric-bike offerings from startups like Wahu Mobility demonstrate growing interest in clean transport on two wheels, highlighting that Ghanaians are eager to explore electric options across vehicle types.

That’s why WopeCar’s EV rental model shines: it lets people experience electric driving today without the full purchase commitment.

Why WopeCar’s EV Fleet Matters

  • Environmental Impact
By adding our first electric vehicle to our rental fleet, WopeCar will significantly reduce tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions, helping Ghana advance its national carbon‑reduction goals. This pioneering service also raises public awareness of clean transport and paves the way for broader EV adoption.

  • Economic Benefits

No capital outlay: Renters avoid the high upfront purchase price of an EV while still enjoying its advantages.

Stable running costs: Electricity prices fluctuate far less than petrol, insulating renters from fuel‑price volatility.

Premium positioning: With growing demand for green mobility, renting an EV enables businesses and individuals to demonstrate their eco‑friendly commitment without buying the vehicle.
