Last month, as part of WopeCar’s 8th anniversary, we celebrated the city we call home, Osu, by inviting travel creators Akosua Shirley and Stella Shanelly on a curated Accra tour we called Drive with Pride. Today, we’re sharing that journey because the landmarks, stories, and food they uncovered aren’t just memories from our celebration; they’re a reminder of why Ghana’s culture and history deserve the spotlight all year round.

Independence Square

Our first stop, Independence Square (Black Star Square), was completed in 1961 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, it was designed as a gathering space for national moments.

Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum

Once a whites-only polo ground, this is the very place Nkrumah declared, “At long last, Ghana, our beloved country, is free forever.” By day, its history is powerful. By night, the lights, music, and fountains make it magical (our influencers’ top insider tip).

Art, Rhythm, and Culture (Art Center)

At the Art Center, the stalls overflowed with kente, African prints, baskets, carvings, beads, and leatherwork. Stella and Akosua even joined a drumming lesson, a hands-on taste of the traditional beats that power Ghana’s festivals and storytelling.

Graffiti With a Story (Ako Adjei Interchange)

The Ako Adjei Interchange murals tell the story of Homowo; Ga people “hooting at hunger.” The twins, the cleansing ritual, and the spiritual realm behind the graffiti reminded us that every one’s wall and culture has a story behind it.

Symbols of Power (Jubilee House)

The Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government, mirrors the shape of a chief’s stool. This is a symbol of leadership and authority.

A Tasty Finish

No Accra tour is complete without food!

We had our eyes set on Labone Junction’s famous kelewele, but since we arrived a little too early, we swapped it for hot yam and chofi instead. Not quite the spice we expected but just as satisfying.

As World Tourism Day highlights “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” we’re proud to celebrate Ghana’s culture and stories; proof that every journey through our city is also a journey into our history.
