The short answer

Yes — you can arrange a car in Ghana entirely from abroad, and for a December trip you should. You book online or in an app, upload a photo ID for verification, pay with a foreign card or Mobile Money, and the car meets you at Accra International Airport or a Ghana address you nominate. Most people arrange it four to eight weeks before flying, because December inventory in Accra runs out.

The rest of this guide covers the parts that actually cause hesitation: your license, the deposit, what happens if your flight is delayed, and whether you want to drive yourself at all.

Can I drive in Ghana on my US, UK or Canadian licence?

Short-term visitors generally drive in Ghana on a valid licence from their home country, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) is widely recommended as a companion document rather than a replacement. An IDP is a certified translation of your existing licence — it is not a licence in its own right, and it is only valid alongside the original.

Two practical points that matter more than the letter of the rule:

Get the IDP anyway. It costs little, takes days rather than weeks in most countries, and it removes an argument at a roadside stop. You obtain it in your country of residence before you travel — you cannot get one after you arrive.

Rental companies set their own bar. Whatever the national rule says, the company handing you keys decides what it will accept. WopeCar verifies identity using a Ghana Card, passport or driver's licence. If you plan to self-drive, check the specific document requirement when you book rather than at the counter.

If you are staying longer than a short visit, the position changes and you may need to convert to a Ghanaian license through the DVLA. That is a different process and worth asking about early.

Should I self-drive, or hire a car with a driver?

This is the decision most visitors get wrong in both directions. Here is an honest split.

Hire a driver if: it is your first time driving in Accra, you are arriving jet-lagged, you will be out in the evenings, you are unfamiliar with the routes, or you would rather spend the trip looking out of the window than watching for a trotro pulling across three lanes. Accra traffic is dense, road markings are inconsistent in places, and local driving conventions take a few days to read. A driver also solves parking, which is its own problem in central Accra during December.

Self-drive if: you have driven in Ghana before, you are comfortable with unfamiliar roads, you want flexibility on timing without coordinating with anyone, or you are doing a lot of short independent trips. Self-drive is cheaper and it means no one is waiting on you.

A common middle path: chauffeur-driven for the Accra portion of the trip, self-drive for a road trip out to Cape Coast or the Volta Region where the driving is simpler and the roads are open.

What do I need to book from abroad?

Four things, and you can assemble all of them before you fly.

  1. Photo ID for verification — Ghana Card, passport, or driver's licence. Uploaded when you book, not on arrival.

  2. A driver's licence if you are self-driving, plus an IDP if you have one.

  3. A payment method — see below.

  4. Your flight details — flight number and arrival time, so the pickup can track a delay.

Will my foreign card work?

Yes. WopeCar processes payments through Paystack, which handles international Visa and Mastercard, and supports Mobile Money for anyone paying from a Ghanaian account. Pricing displays in USD, EUR or GHS, so you can see the cost in the currency you actually think in.

Two things worth doing before you pay:

Tell your bank you are transacting with Ghana. A first international charge to a new merchant is exactly the pattern fraud systems flag. A thirty-second note in your banking app avoids a declined payment and a re-booking.

Check your card's foreign transaction fee. It is usually 0–3%. It is not charged by the rental company, but it is real money on a multi-day booking, and some cards charge nothing.

How does the deposit work?

WopeCar holds a refundable deposit of GHS 500 or 25% of your rental depending on type and duration. It covers the ordinary risks of handing over a vehicle — damage, fines incurred during your rental, fuel returned short of the agreed level.

The deposit is refunded after the vehicle is returned and checked. Two questions when you book, with answers in our FAQs available:

  • How long after return does the refund process?

  • Does it return to the original payment method, or another route?

Any rental company anywhere should be able to answer both immediately. If one can't, that tells you something.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Give your flight number when you book, not just an arrival time. A flight number can be tracked; a time cannot. A delayed arrival then adjusts the pickup rather than stranding you at 2am next to a car that left four hours ago.

If you only ever remember one line from this guide, make it that one. It is the single most common reason airport pickups go wrong, and it is entirely avoidable.

How does airport pickup work?

You are met in the arrivals area with your name. For a self-drive booking you complete the handover — documents checked, vehicle walked around, condition photographed — and drive out. For a chauffeur-driven booking your driver takes your bags and you go.

Three things to do before you leave the airport, whichever option you chose:

Photograph the car. All four sides, the wheels, and any existing scratch or dent. Do this in daylight if your flight allows, with flash if not. It takes ninety seconds and it settles any later disagreement about pre-existing damage before it becomes one.

Check the fuel level and agree what it should be on return. Note it, ideally in a photo of the dashboard.

Save a phone number that a human answers. Not a general enquiries line — the number of the person who will actually help at 9pm on a Sunday.

What does it cost?

WopeCar's published rates run from around $65 per day for a sedan such as a Hyundai Elantra to $165 per day for a larger 4x4 such as a Lexus GX460, with mid-size SUVs in between. Longer rentals price differently from single days, and December rates in Accra move with demand — another reason to book early rather than optimistically.

Budget separately for fuel, and for a driver's daily rate if you are hiring one. Ask whether either is included before you compare two quotes, because operators bundle them differently and a headline rate can hide the difference.

When should I book for a December trip?

Book your car when you book your flight, or shortly after. Not in December.

Ghana recorded 141,186 international arrivals in December 2025, up 11.35% on December 2024. Those visitors are competing for a fixed number of vehicles in Greater Accra, and the larger SUVs — the ones families want — go first. By the first week of December, what is left is what nobody else wanted.

The practical rule: four to eight weeks ahead for a December trip. Two weeks ahead the rest of the year.

A short checklist

  • Book four to eight weeks before a December trip

  • Get an IDP in your country of residence before you fly

  • Upload ID for verification when booking, not on arrival

  • Tell your bank you'll be transacting with Ghana

  • Give your flight number, not just an arrival time

  • Confirm the deposit refund window in writing

  • Photograph the car before leaving the airport

  • Save a phone number a human answers
