On May 22, 2025, WopeCar joined forces with the Akaya Foundation in a significant initiative to empower students at Akorley Basic School in Somanya, Ghana. This impactful day focused on fostering open conversations around crucial topics: menstrual hygiene education and inspiring career exploration for young girls.
Addressing Challenges: Why Girls Leave School in Ghana
The day commenced with engaging small group sessions, expertly facilitated by dedicated volunteers from both WopeCar and the Akaya Foundation. Together, we engaged girls aged 8 to 17 in a candid discussion about the systemic challenges preventing some girls in Ghana from continuing their education.
Their responses were profoundly honest and eye-opening, highlighting critical issues such as:
-
Poverty
-
Lack of adequate support systems
-
Early pregnancy
-
The pervasive belief that girls’ futures are less valuable than boys’.
Despite these sobering realities, these remarkable young girls were equally quick to propose insightful solutions, revealing a level of awareness and resilience that deeply moved everyone present.
Inspiring Futures: Career Exploration with Sheena Sue Biney
Our General Manager, Sheena Sue Biney, led an engaging and interactive career exploration session. This segment was designed to challenge the girls to look beyond traditional career paths, such as nursing or law.
Sheena empowered them to begin identifying their unique strengths, personal interests, and ambitious dreams, reinforcing the powerful message that they possess the inherent ability to actively shape their own successful futures.
Demystifying Menstruation: Essential Hygiene Education
Following the career session, Maud, the insightful representative from the Akaya Foundation, led a vital session on menstrual hygiene. For many of the girls, this was their very first introduction to modern menstrual products like tampons and menstrual cups. Through the use of clear visuals, practical demonstrations, and an open discussion format, we successfully demystified menstruation, encouraging healthy and stigma-free conversations about their bodies and well-being.
Supporting Girls' Needs: Sanitary Pad & Care Package Donation
To ensure ongoing support and access to essential resources, WopeCar and the Akaya Foundation proudly donated sanitary pads and comprehensive care packages to Akorley Basic School.
This initiative ensures that these vital supplies will be readily available for any girl in need, helping to remove a significant barrier to their continued education.
Building Confidence: Affirmations for Future Queens
The day concluded on an incredibly high and uplifting note, as our very own Selasie Torgby Tetteh led a powerful confidence-building affirmation session.
Equipped with beautiful, handmade crowns crafted by the WopeCar team, each girl proudly declared:
“I am bold. I am kind. I am special. I am a queen!”
It was truly beautiful and inspiring to witness them not only wear these symbolic crowns but profoundly own the powerful declarations they made.
WopeCar's Commitment: Investing in Ghana's Bright Future
We are immensely proud to have collaborated with the Akaya Foundation on this deeply meaningful cause. At WopeCar, we firmly believe that true empowerment begins with unrestricted access to knowledge, equitable opportunities, and unwavering support systems.
This memorable visit to Akorley Basic School served as a powerful reminder of just how incredibly bright Ghana’s future can be if we collectively continue to invest purposefully and passionately in its girls.
